e castle on the Kaczawa River was erected by Bolko I at the same time as the location of the town in 1296 or shortly before this event. The castle and the town were managed on behalf of the prince by burgrave, who is mentioned in documents from 1369. In 1534, the city council of Świerzawa bought the vogt's office from Otto von Zedlitz, since that year the castle has been ruled by knightly families.
The castle was probably damaged during the great fire of the town in 1608, and during the

Thirty Years' War it was destroyed by the Swedish army stationed in Świerzawa. Probably not rebuilt, it fell into complete ruin.
