Castle in Sromowce Wyżne

o the north of the Wygon housing estate belonging to Sromowce Wyżni, there is the Zamczysko hill belonging to the Flaków massif. Probably in the 15th century, a watchtower was built here on the Polish side of the border with Hungary, which was to guard the Dunajec valley together with Czorsztyn.

There is also no information about the fall of this stronghold. Several hypotheses include the view that long-term peaceful relations with Hungary resulted in the abandonment of the fortalice in Sromowce and the preservation of only the castle in Czorsztyn.

Another possibility was suggested by B. Gustawcz. According to the Czech chronicles of Marcin Bielski and the Polish chronicles of Jan Długosz, before 1434 a unit of Hussites led by Frederick of Ostroh after leaving Spiš took up

a position near Czorsztyn, from where they planned armed expeditions to both Polish and Hungarian lands. Władysław Jagiełło organized a military expedition that caused the Hussites to withdraw.

It seems possible that the Hussites occupied the existing fortifications, and Jagiełło's army destroyed the stronghold, which was not rebuilt.

The fortalicium occupied the top of the hill, from the east and south there are vertical cliffs 20-40 meters high, from the north-east a moat was dug, and a rampart was made of earth. The whole is in the shape of a triangle with sides of 50x70x70 meters.

Apparently, in the 19th century, treasure hunters found the remains of vaulted cellars here, but superficial research conducted in 1955 and 1967 by Gabriel Leńczyk and Andrzej Żaki did not reveal any remains of brick elements. Currently, the area is overgrown with vegetation and it is becoming more and more difficult to see the remains of the stronghold.
