o n a small hill among the marshes, southwest of the town, there was a castle of the Order of St. John. It was erected by them in 1237, perhaps on the site of an earlier stronghold. In 1269, the castle was captured and destroyed by Barnim I, Duke of Pomerania. After conquering Recz in 1284, the margraves of Brandenburg founded a town northeast of the destroyed castle, and gave the ruins to the Cistercian order. During the construction of the monastery, the castle was completely demolished. The monastery was suppressed in 1827.
