i n the place where the castle now stands, already in the 10th century, there was a well-fortified Prussian stronghold of Pasłęka. When the Teutonic Knights came to Pomerania, they did not immediately manage to capture these fortifications. In the end, however, they did it. In 1297, master Meinhardt founded a town here under the Chełmno law, which was surrounded by fortifications. In the years 1318-1330, a brick castle was erected on the site of the hillfort.
The castle is located on a promontory with steep slopes flowing by the Wąska River. It was founded on a rectangular plan connected with the town by fortifications - in the southern wall there was an entrance, to the northern one a residential building with dimensions of 12 x 51 meters was added. The building was made of brick, had two floors,

and its interiors had a tripartite layout. From the castle, there was probably an underground passage under the Wąska River to the village of Robity, three kilometers away.
In 1410, after the Battle of Grunwald, the Teutonic garrison handed over the castle to King Jagiełło, who headed for Dzierzgoń and Malbork. After the unsuccessful siege of Malbork the castle was taken over by the Livonian master, and the Peace of Toruń granted the castle to the Teutonic Knights. During the Thirteen Years' War the castle was again in Polish hands, but the new borders of the Teutonic state established in the Second Peace of Toruń included the Pasłęk castle. Commander from Elbląg attached to the Polish moved here. At that time, the west wing was added.
In 1521, the townspeople of Elbląg captured the castle and blew it up a year later. During the reconstruction by the Prussian princes Albrecht and George in the years 1543-1578, another - eastern - wing was erected, and from the north the castle gained two cylindrical towers at the corners.
