Castle in Nowy Sącz

he ruins of the royal castle in the fork of the Dunajec and Kamienica rivers. It was built in the Gothic style around the mid-fourteenth century during the reign of Casimir the Great, it was supposed to guard the trade route to Hungary. It was the seat of castellany. It was often visited by kings, m.in. Queen Jadwiga during her entry to Polish. In the fifteenth century, Jan Długosz stayed there. The castle burned down in 1522. In the 16th-17th centuries, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by Stanisław and Sebastian Lubomirski, then destroyed by the Swedes. During the flood in 1813, the western part with the tower collapsed. The preserved part was renovated at the end of the 19th century and then, with a view to establishing a museum, in the interwar years. During the last war, the castle

was blown up.

Only the Renaissance tower (Baszta Kowalska) and fragments of the perimeter wall with a shooting porch, rebuilt in 1951, have survived.
