Castle in Nowe Miasto Lubawskie

he castle in Nowe Miasto Lubawskie was erected at the ford on the Drwęca River in 1320. It was surrounded by a moat, which can be seen in the iconographic record from the 17th century. In 1325, the settlement near the castle received city rights. The exact location of the castle has not been established so far, probably it was located in the eastern corner (next to the church erected in 1330), or in the south-east, Leszek Kajzer is in favor of this location.

Until 1343, the castle was the seat of the Teutonic vogt, who later moved to Bratiana. The degraded castle in the fifteenth century was rebuilt into a water mill.

In 1455, the townspeople opted for the Order, so the castle crew of the Teutonic Knights could take care of the siege of the castle in Lubawa, taken over by the Prussian Union. After the Second Peace of Toruń the New Town became part of the Kingdom of Poland. In 1621, the castle served as a prison.

In 1625, the army of Andrzej Lisowski was quartered in the town, the soldiers plundered and destroyed the town, and the castle must have suffered as well. The end of its existence falls on the wars with the Swedes. The town defended itself for a long time, and after its capture, the Swedes destroyed the castle.

After the First Partition of Polish, the city came under the rule of Prussia, and in the years 1807-1815 it was briefly within the borders of the Duchy of Warsaw.
