t he castle rises in the northern part of the town located on a rocky hill. Previously, there was a stronghold here, which during the reign of Bolesław Chrobry in 1017 was unsuccessfully besieged by the Germans. During archaeological works, traces of settlement from the 8th century and fragments of wooden and earth structures associated with this castellan stronghold were discovered. The brick castle was built in the fourteenth century by Bolko I, the prince

of Świdnica-Jawor. It was destroyed during the Hussite Wars in the years 1429-1434. The Duke of Brzeg-Legnica, Frederick I, rebuilt the castle in the second half of the fifteenth century.
In 1585, prince George II ordered the castle to be rebuilt into a Renaissance residence. The reconstruction was carried out by architect Hans Lugan. In a preserved document of George II, the prince ordered the construction of a cloister covered with a porch, similar to the one seen in Prague.
The castle was partially destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. In 1712-1724, a baroque chapel was erected at the castle, soon after, in 1735, the castle burned down. It was not until 1830 that the reconstruction of the destroyed buildings was undertaken, of which only the walls of the lower storeys remained after the fire. The chapel was demolished in 1964.
