he castle was built here by the Teutonic Knights in the mid-fourteenth century as the seat of the Teutonic bailiff. It was intended on a quadrilateral plan with a courtyard, Gothic. It was destroyed by the Polish army in 1414, then by the Swedes in 1659 and Napoleon's army in 1807.
