t he first mention of a defensive settlement dates back to the end of the 11th century. Legend says that in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains prince Mieszko, son of Bolesław the Bold, hunted, who, weary, found a stream with tasty water in this place. Having tasted it, he felt full of strength again. Next to the river, large tusks were also found, hence the name of the settlement and the river crossing it - Silnica. The first documented record of the name of the village was found in the Chronicle of Wincenty Kadłubek from 1213. The town, repeatedly destroyed by Tatar invasions and troops of the Dukes of Mazovia, in the 12th century obtained permission to build fortifications.
In the years 1637-1641, a magnificent building was erected on the castle hill by the famous diplomat, advisor to Sigismund III and Władysław IV, bishop Jakub Zadzik. It is a combination of a noble residence with defensive elements. The castle was surrounded by a wall with arrowslits, which was flanked by Baszta Prochowa. The front towers of the castle served as an arsenal and a prison.
The castle consists of the main body and two wings added in the eighteenth century. Currently, it is one of the most valuable architectural monuments in Poland. His chambers have been preserved almost unchanged for three hundred years. On the main axis of the castle there is the Knight's

Hall with the original larch ceiling. A similar ceiling from 1641 also has the Great Dining Room, which today serves as a concert hall for early music. The atmosphere is emphasized by original furniture from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and paintings by the most outstanding artists, m.in. Dolabella from 1641, J. Malczewski, A. Grottger and S. Wyspiański. There is also the Treasury, where you can see valuable goldsmith's exhibits.
One of the portraits, the work of the eighteenth-century Italian school, depicts a lady whose figure makes an extraordinary impression. In her robes of black lace, she looks as if she stopped for a moment, but in a moment she will be among us. Apparently, the old employees of the museum sometimes saw the black lady moving silently in the castle chambers at dusk. She always disappeared as part of her portrait.
