w ithin the former fortifications in the eastern part of the city, there used to be a royal castle. At the same time as the town, a wooden castle was built on the island, which after 1253 was the seat of Bolesław the Pious. A brick castle was erected here by Casimir the Great next to the former Toruń Gate. On the west side there was an outer bailey, and directly next to the walls there was a residential house, which can be deduced from the town plan from 1785. The remaining castle buildings formed a closed courtyard.
The fire that engulfed the town in 1792 did not spare the castle either. For a long time, the castle area stood in ruins, because it was not until 1819 that a school building was erected here (I don't know about today, but in the 70s of the twentieth century there was an Adam Asnyk high

school here). In the basement of this building, there are most likely still remains of the castle. Traces of foundations were also uncovered next to the buildings, which were secured so that they could be viewed.
