t he main, high wing of the knight's castle built on Działdówka has survived. The Teutonic Knights began to build the original castle in 1306, shortly after the Chełmno bishop ceded these lands. It was the seat of the monastic procurator and then the mayor. Initially, it was a Gothic building on a square plan with two towers. Its southeastern wing and quadrangular courtyard were surrounded by a wall and a moat. The castle's defensive properties were enhanced by the terrain conditions - on three sides there were marshes and swamps, and on the fourth side the Działdówka River. The complex included the main castle and the outer bailey, which somehow connected the castle with the city.
The castle was temporarily in Polish hands in
Zamek w Działdowie
Plan of the castle in Barciany according to Conrad Steinbrecht
1410, then regained during the Thirty Years' War.
In the 16th century, it was rebuilt. In the following centuries, it was dismantled and fell into ruin. At the end of the last century it was renovated, even though it was damaged during the last war.
The preserved building houses the former refectory with gothic vaults. There are still faint remnants of other buildings and towers.
