Destroyed by the Teutonic Order in 1332 it was soon reconstructed. In the 17th century the castle was destroyed again, this time by the Swedes during so called "Swedish deluge". It has not been reconstructed since then. In the 19th century more than a half of the structure was pulled down. The remaining building houses a post office and a library.
